Parasite Prevention

Parasite prevention and control is an important part of pet ownership as they can cause serious illness or even death in our pets.

Ticks, fleas, and mosquitos can transmit diseases, parasites, and worms. Many infected pets do not show any signs of illness at all so you may not always be able to tell if your pet has parasites. These parasites can hide in your pet’s fur, skin and/or intestinal tract which can also make it difficult to determine if your pet is infected.

Some parasites are transmittable to humans, including children, and other pets. These diseases include rabies, toxoplasmosis, roundworms, hookworms, ringworm, giardia, cat scratch disease, pneumonitis, scabies, tuberculosis, salmonella, and heartworms. In most cases, simply maintaining good sanitation and following a year-round doctor recommended deworming program are “the keys’ to preventing these.

Our Parasite Control and Prevention Program

We believe it is important to follow a year-round parasite prevention program. Our doctor recommended products are proven effective and will keep your pet safe and healthy.  This includes annual fecal testing on all pets, including indoor pets.

Chesapeake Veterinary Hospital carries products we can recommend for your pet’s parasite control and prevention program, including Simparica Trio (our newest, chewable option that provides 3 way protection against fleas/ticks and heartworms for  dogs), Simparica (a chewable flea/tick prevention for dogs) Proheart12 (a injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 12 months!), Revolution Plus (a topical for cats that protects against fleas/ticks and heartworms) Be sure to ask our staff about current rebates available!

It is important to be proactive by keeping your pet on a parasite control and prevention program.

Our veterinarians can recommend a schedule for parasite testing and review with you some ways to control parasites in your pet and at home.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) has great information on all different parasites that pets can get.  Please check out this link to learn more
